No, we're NOT discussing chickens and eggs! We're talking about brushing and flossing, or is it flossing and brushing?

Brushing certainly comes before flossing in the dictionary, but according to the Oral Health Foundation (in the UK), not so when it comes to our teeth. New research has shown interdental cleaning (flossing string or brush) before actual tooth brushing is the best way to clean our teeth effectively, so listen up!

The study found that flossing loosens bacteria and food debris from between the teeth, which allows brushing to be much more successful at removing plaque.

We know that brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste is essential for a good oral health routine, this study shows that flossing also has a big part to play when it comes to keeping our teeth and gums healthy.

Why Is Flossing Important?

Brushing alone only cleans three of the five surfaces of our teeth, so cleaning between them before we grab our toothbrush is hugely beneficial. It helps to prevent gum disease by removing plaque from areas the toothbrush alone cannot reach.

Floss brushes come in a range of different sizes, from as thin as 0.4 mm to as thick as 1.5 mm. It should be able to fit between your teeth comfortably, you shouldn’t need to use a lot of force. You may find you need a couple different sizes, but the best way to find out is to ask us the next time you have an appointment.

Flossing removes plaque and food particles between teeth before brushing. Yet, do you know what else keeps your smile healthy? Scheduling an appointment with our teeth cleaning dentists in Grandville, MI. Call the Grandville Dental Health Center at (616) 739-6001.
