Common Questions

Children's Dentistry — Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental visit by age one or within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. Early visits help establish a dental home and allow us to monitor your child's development from the start.

How do I prepare my child for their first dental visit?

Talk positively about the dentist and avoid using words like 'pain' or 'hurt.' Read books about going to the dentist. Let your child know that the dentist is a friendly helper who keeps their teeth healthy. We'll do the rest!

How often should my child see the dentist?

Most children benefit from dental visits every six months for a cleaning and exam. Some children with a higher risk of cavities may need to be seen more frequently.

When do children start losing their baby teeth?

Most children begin losing their baby teeth around age 6, starting with the lower front teeth. The process continues until around age 12–13 when most permanent teeth have erupted.

Does my child need dental sealants?

We typically recommend sealants when the first permanent molars come in around age 6, and again when the second permanent molars erupt around age 12. Sealants are a highly effective way to prevent cavities in the grooves of back teeth.

My child is afraid of the dentist. What can you do?

We understand dental anxiety in children and have many strategies to help. We take a tell-show-do approach, explain everything in child-friendly terms, and never rush. We also offer nitrous oxide sedation for children who need extra help relaxing.
